  1. What we are discussing here; RCL thinks it is illigal !

Reliance Comm files FIR on tampered handsets

    Our Bureau

New Delhi May 27 Reliance Communications has filed an FIR with the Economic Offence Wing of the Delhi Police alleging that some of the handsets, supplied by Nokia, meant for its own subscribers were being used by Tata Teleservices' users.

Reliance has claimed that the handsets were hacked and modified to make it compliant with Tata Teleservices network.

Reliance had entered into an agreement with Nokia for supply of specific CDMA handsets, which were offered to the subscribers at subsidised rates. The handsets were tuned to function only on Reliance's network.

Nokia was supplying the handsets through its distributor for CDMA products - Brightpoint.

    Hacked and modified

According to the FIR filed by Reliance on May 15, "Handsets meant for use on our network has been hacked and programmed so that the same can be used on network of Tata Indicom. We would further like to add that these handsets, embedded with our logo and trademark, are assets of the company and it had been given in trust to the manufacturer and its distributor. Hence, its unauthorised use on any other network is amounting to cheating and criminal breach of trust," said the FIR.

Reliance has alleged that it has found 6 such handsets in the market and the company expressed fears that more such handsets might be there which are still undetected. Reliance has sought an investigation into the matter to know where the tampering happened.

Reliance has also filed a similar FIR in Jaipur where handsets supplied by ZTE were allegedly found to be in use by subscribers of Tata Teleservices.

  2. I fully agree with anuragz. Why so much hype about the new BSNL and RCom plan of limited roaming.

If you are looking for roaming as a chep way to stay in touch with your family or your girl friend, Tata plans are still very good. Instead of paying Rs. 550 to BSNL for 300 minutes of free roaming usage, pay Rs. 249 to call your loved ones for 600 minutes in Tata.

If you are looking for roaming for your business purpose, look at Tata's Business Gold plan - Instead of paying Rs. 550 to BSNL for 300 minutes of free roaming usage, pay Rs. 350 for 500 minutes in Tata.

For more usage or detail statistics please read my post at http://www.rimweb.in/forums/index.php?show...art=#entry85964

  3. Now it seems that there will not be any "abolishing" of roaming charges. Todays news papers says that BSNL and RCom has come up with new "Plans" for providing some free usage minutes while in roaming. And the height is that A Raja is taking credit for this ! It seems that Raja is not as competant as Dayanidhi Maran. He is not agressive enough to take on operators like Raja.

Now, this so called "Free Roaming" comes with a price tag of Rs 550/Month - 300 Minutes free minutes in BSNL. While RCom has two plans for this category and one of them is of Rs.990 !!!

Here is the BSNL Plan : http://bsnl.co.in/newsdetailed.php?news_id=378

Dont you think these Raja, BSNL and RCom are fooling the customers ?

  4. Tata has launched a very attractive add on pkg for onnet std on one particular number....

    Most Dialled Lite -STD

All T2T Calls & SMS to One Tata Number anywhere in India to be charged @ 25paise/min & 25paise/SMS (Rs.25/ mth )

    Most Dialled Jumbo - STD

500 minutes T2T Calls + 500 T2T SMS free per month to One Tata Number anywhere in India. Additional usage charged @ 50p/min & 50p/SMS (Rs. 100/mth)

    Most Dialled Local

    500 minutes T2T Calls + 500 T2T SMS free per month to One Local Tata Number. Additional usage charged @ 25p/min & 25p/SMS (Rs.25/ mth )

I think Having STD calls as cheap as .25p/min that too on a very nominal rental of Rs 25/month is indeed very cheap.

Yes, I found this plans cheapest in India. Its even cheper than Delight 499 of Reliance.

    Here is the comparision:

Select Tata's Business Silver Plan. (Rent 224 + Most Dialled Lite - STD @ 25. So total Fix bill is 249). This plan comes with 150 Rs. of Free Talk Time.

Now, if you use this plan to call upto 600 Mins STD outgoing to one Tata number the total bill will be Rs. 249

If you use this plan to call 700 Mins STD outgoing to one Tata number the total bill will be Rs. 274

if you use this plan to call 800 Mins STD outgoing to one Tata number the total bill will be Rs. 299

if you use this plan to call 900 Mins STD outgoing to one Tata number the total bill will be Rs. 324

Now comparing this plan with Reliance's Delight 499 (Fix Rent 499). This plan features 40p/min rate for R2R calling throught India. And it comes with 160 Rs. of Free Talk Time. Please rememebr that this plan has the chepest R2R STD.

If you use this plan to call 600 Mins STD outgoing to any Reliance number the total bill will be Rs. 579

If you use this plan to call 700 Mins STD outgoing to any Reliance number the total bill will be Rs. 619

If you use this plan to call 800 Mins STD outgoing to any Reliance number the total bill will be Rs. 659

Please note that in this illustration I am assuming that in Tata's plan you are exclusively using the plan for T2T STD. And in Reliance you are exclusively using the plan for R2R STD.

Also note that in Tata you can avail this cheap STD facility (25p/min) to only one Tata STD number. In Reliance you can call any reliance number at 40p/min.

Though it is tempting to go for Tata because of the striking difference bwetween others and tata, please be advised, rather warned, that Tata has the worst CC in india. Its not only my personal experience but more than 100 ppl on net (literally) share the same view. Please visit http://www.mouthshut.com/product-reviews/T...-925042700.html before going for Tata.

  5. Kewl... I roam atleast fifteen days in a month if it is true I am moving on to BSNL....

As per my understanding, if the roaming get abolished, it will be abolished across the operators. So no need to change your operator, you could roam freely even with your current operator and no need to move to BSNL.

I mentioned BSNL because in Gujarat, there is a scheme of 111. In which Landline subsribers get unlimited free calling to all BSNL subscribers withing the circle. So they can call you free when you are inside Gujarat and if the proposal gets through even outside Guajarat. But this has nothing to do with incoming calls. If roaming continue to exist, they still can call you free of charge but you have to pay the incoming charge.

  6. Reliance drops roaming prices by 70%

Press Trust of India - Tuesday, May 22, 2007 04:41:07 PM

Starting a price war, Reliance Communications on Tuesday slashed its roaming rates by about 70 per cent at the lowest 40 paise a minute on some select plans, while incoming has been made just Re 1 per minute.

Incoming calls on roaming has been reduced to just Re 1 a minute from Rs 1.75 a minute.

In February, TRAI had reduced the roaming charges, as per which, the maximum permissible charge for roaming calls, irrespective of terminating networks and tariff plans, was set at Rs 1.40 per minute for outgoing local calls, Rs 2.40 for outgoing national long distance calls and Rs 1.75 for incoming calls. The telecom regulator had already removed rentals.

Roaming charge reduction gained more ground after former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran had told the media that he was planning the abolition of national roaming charges as a gift to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on his birthday on June 3.

The current Minister A Raja has said the Government is looking into the possibility.

Reliance Communications President (Personal Business) S.P Shukla said, "Now, we have taken a step further by reducing roaming rates to as low as 40 paise per minute on select plans.

This should add real value to those customers, who travel frequently. A significant feature of this rate reduction has been on incoming calls, while roaming, which have been reduced from current Rs 1.75 per minute to Re 1 per minute.

This move of Reliance comes close on the heels of launch of the Rs 777 monochrome handset, Rs 1234 colour handset and the Rs 499 Lifetime Recharge Voucher.

All these moves were aimed at expanding the mobility market. Now, with this roaming initiative, Reliance has made its proposition highly attractive for our frequently travelling high-usage customers, Shukla said.

These plans on Post-paid and Pre-paid are available for subscription starting today.

  7. Govt considers abolition of roaming charges

    PTI[ SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2007 06:30:13 PM]

TIRUCHIRAPPALLI (TN): A proposal to abolish domestic roaming charges imposed by mobile phone service providers is being considered by the government, Union IT and Communications Minister A Raja said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters at the airport here, Raja said discussions were still on in this regard in line with a commitment by his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran. Maran had promised to waive roaming charges as a "gift to the nation" on June 3, coinciding with the birthday of his granduncle and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

According to estimates, the move will collectively take away Rs 4,000 crore from various telecom operators. Asked about the chances of bringing telephone services in Chennai under the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Raja said decisions on such policy matters could not be taken in a haste.

"Such decisions could not be taken just like that, as after all it has been hardly four days since I assumed the new office," he said. Raja was on his first visit to his Perambalur constituency after taking charge of the IT and communications portfolio.

So now what will happen? will the operators agree to lose Rs 4000 crores? Lets wait and watch and enjoy the proceedings.

Most of the readers of this thread has expressed their worries on this news. They are worried about the Operators' ARPUs and thus fear that abolishing roaming will result in increase of rates of other services like local calls. But I take the liberty to disagree with them. And this is the reason - ARPU is one of the many parameters for the profitibility of the operators. Its not the only parameter. In context of India this is not even the most important parameter. Even after One India plan, Rent free roaming and reduced roaming charges operators are making profit and not only they are making profit their quarterly results shows the incremental growth QoQ. The simple reson for this growth is the penetration to the market where they have not yet reached. For example they can tap those customers in those rural areas where nobody has reached so far. Look at the response RCL got for 777 mobile. This is targeted to those who are the first time mobile users. This simple Mantra in current scenario is Cheaper Service, Wider Reach, Incremental Growth. So, I am not worried about their ARPUs and I have no fear of increasing local call rates. I am hoping for the best - abolition of roaming. This is required in tune with developed nations.

  8. I think the logic is soemthing like

When you are roaming all calls are charged at the same rate as your plan. In other words, say, say you are on Re.1 a minute for local calls and Rs.1.25 a minute for STD, then local and STD calls from your roaming location will be charged at the same rate. All incoming calls will also be billed to you at the subscribed STD rate, i.e. 1.25 a minute.

This makes sense. When roaming for outgoing calls you are a local as far as the network is concerned. So the caller pays as if he is calling you at your home location, and you pay for the charges from the home location to your the current location.

I am sure they keep track within the network about your current location, and the local incoming call (from at least within the same service provider's network) is essentlally a local call. They are still making more money since as far as billing goes it is billed as a call to your base location (STD) and then diverted to you at your roaming location (STD again).

The logic that you give is fine but that doesnt mean "Abolishing" the roaming charges.

By the way, there is one more link relavent to this thread : http://www.ibnlive.com/news/maran-planned-...es/40549-4.html

Please read the last line in the news item.

  9. I don't see any sense in making STD calls cheaper at the cost of more expensive local calls!

And for people like me, whos calls are 95% to local mobiles, it would actually mean a hike in bills! :(

Worst is, that inspite of the merger of some circles ...eg. Mah & Goa with Bombay, most telcos dont effectively consider these circles as one, wrt tariffs! :winko: Which means though I can call other local Airtel nos at 10p in happy hrs, I have to pay 10 times higher for calling a Bombay Airtel number! They dont let u create groups with Bombay numbers either! Isnt this in violation against the govt. decision to merge the circles wrt tariffs?

Yes you are right. STD calls should not be made cheaper at the cost of local calls. Just to remind you that here we are not debating about the STD call but Roaming.

Besides, as per DNA Money, a formula is already been worked out to make the Roaming fee abolished. As per that they are not touching any charges on local calls, they are planning to reduce the revenue share fees to 6% from the current 8% to 12%. So, its not going to be a burden on consumer but govt. is going to sacrifice a part of the revenue from cellular operator.

In my opinion, if Maran had to announce the plan, the home work might already have done. And there cannot be any change in remaining 15 days. But still that all depends on the will power and the influnce of cellular operators on A Raja.

  10. Stop dreaming, man. All the above scenarios are hypothetical only.

Even in our own RCL, the same may apply. i.e. people can divert their fixed line phone calls to their mobiles and yet roam the country freely.

Will all the operators take the bait and do way with this roaming business? It appears highly unlikely. Their ARPUs will take a severe beating. And yes all local call rates will go up. They were already threatening this when the roaming rates were reduced last. And maybe we will also see a scenario where all ONNET packs (only to counter all free call diverts or maybe ban call diverts altogether) will be withdrawn.

Yes my friend, the scenarios are hypothetical but can be true if Maran's plan gets through. And this is already considered as populist move in political circles. In countries like US and UK there is no concept like Roaming and thus its not unnatural to abolish the charges on that. The only thing required is a strong political will which Maran had. Maran had done number of things which has changed whole telecom scenario in last 2 yrs. He was responsible for for bringing down the roaming charges from 5+ Rs to 1.4 Rs. And the biggest gift to indian telecom scenario - the One India plan. Even after all these popular moves in favour of consumer all operators are doing business and their profits are increasing quarter after quarter. So dont worry for their ARPUs, they will earn from other avenues.

  11. There were so many headlines in recent days about Dayanidhi Maran's plan to remove Roaming chanrges. After his exit it seemed that the plan may hang in balance. But the recent news in DNA Money and also on Zee news shows that it may still go on. http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=37...BUS&ssid=54

Now, if that happens on 3rd June, what does it mean for us ?

The main thing I see is that most people will buy a cheapest lifetime scheme in their own circle and roam around the country without paying a single penny for incoming calls.

People in Gujarat will even have better facilities. In Gujarat the Rs. 111 plan of BSNL on landline facilitates unlimited BSNL (lanline + mobile) calling within circle. After free roaming, a person having a BSNL mobile will not only get free incoming but the caller from the circle having landline will also not get charged.

This opens the possibilities of nearly unlimited free calling between your loved ones staying on the other corner of the country.

Please share your ideas on this.

  12. Hi,

Right now, I am in USA. I brought Kyo 7135 here. I visited Verizon outlet here in Reading, MA. But they told me that they dont support 7135 anymore. Had it been a different handset, which they support, they would have registered my ESN.

This is just an info for the benefit of the forum.

I am new to US and dont know much about other CDMA players, I will try to do the same with other CDMA service providers and keep you posted. If anybody knows about them please let me know.

  13. Whatever you are discussing but one thing is clear that till now there is no law/rule in India and not even heard of such things even in abroad which bans unsolicitated SMSes. Yes it is illegal for unsolicitated calls but not for SMS.

Post Edited. Please do not spam the board. Puneet.

  14. I have got this file which lists AT commands for Qualcomm. I guess, since LG and Kyocera uses Qualcomm chipset, this can be helpful to HP or other developers.

Please let us know your findings.

The AT Command you have Given does not show any Method to send any SMS please Clarify

Well... I was not aware that the file didnt have Send method. I came across that file having Qualcomm AT commands so I thought it may be useful. Sorry for the post as it is not of any use.
