Airtel Introduces India’s First “0” Processing Fee Prepaid
raccoon replied to amitstg's topic in The Lounge
Well, Airtel (Mah & Goa) charges Rs. 100 as access fee on Rs. 350 voucher. Besides this there is a value voucher for around Rs. 50 which brings call rates down to 50 paise. So these new plans seem more like jugglery ...in fact may be more expensive for heavy users as call rates are higher! I feel all operators should be prohibited form charging access free. It will make tariff comparision so much simpler if we just have to compare tariffs on a 60 second pulse! I guess Tata was the 1st to have this kind of tariff structure... -
One of the simplest (not always) and most concrete things to do is to not be a subscriber of such operators... As for TRAI ....does it even read emails???

Reliance Communications Acquires 1.2 Million Subscribers In March 2007

If things continue the way they are, then maybe it will be the other way around! And I wont be too unhappy, if that happens... -
See this statement on the Hutch website (Mah & Goa section) - Furthermore, Hutch customer care told me that they dont have a toll free number (even from a Hutch phone!).
-
Nopes. Hutch (Maharashtra) does not have any toll free number. If you dont believe me, you can check it out on their web site also. I confirmed that with Hutch customer care also! One good thing about Hutch is their website - updated with the latest plans and fairly comprehensive info! FWIW, Idea CC, which I have been finding extremely difficult to get thru does not work at night after 11! And thruout the day the lines are mostly busy! AFAIK, CC of most/all telcos work 24/7 ...but Idea has its own ideas I guess... But problem is its v difficult to ignore Idea if you want the best GSM coverage and if you want to save on tariffs ...it seems to be the dominant operator in Poona... And lets not get into what TRAI mandates ...TRAI has also mandated that they cannot charge migration fees. And at least RIM and Hutch are openly charging for that! In fact you will find it mentioned even on their websites! Ya ...they may be naming it different...
-
Great, now Telcos have good incentive to make things messier than they already are! More complaints will mean more revenue! Well, Hutch is the only operator AFAIK who doesent have a toll-free helpline in Maharashtra circle. They are also said to have one of the worst customer service. It was one of the reasons why I didnt even consider Hutch as an option for my new GSM connection...

Finally bought a Nokia 1112 for Rs. 1,900. Had picked up what I think was a LG B2060 (was getting it for Rs. 2,300 after lil bargaining) but kept is back after some apprehension ...and after some pissing off with the UI. The looks cud however beat the Nokia 1112 black and blue. 1112 is a really, really BARE bones phone ...dosent even have multiple field address book! And only 200 entries possible ...which Nokia shamelessly advertises this as "Large contact storage - up to 200 entries in built-in phonebook" and "Large SMS storage on phone - up to 60 SMS"! No torch on these new Nokia models either ...unlike the 1100. And the hands free (headset) looks as cheap as the cheapest unbranded ones you cud find on the streets! On the plus side it seems to do what little it can with some aplomb. Keys are tactile and good for rapid SMSing. It supports long SMSes upto 920 characters! The SMS editor has an "undo" function. Ringtones are "nice" for a ph of this class. But seems the SMS "send to many" option sends the SMS 1-by-1 as you select contacts from the address book ...instead of sending it all at once! One function I was very, very happy to find was the SMS "Send Later" function! Sorely missed this on GSM handsets, as I used it frequently on my RIM. However, on 1112 it seems that its a phone function and not a network function ...so I guess it wont work if the ph is off or out of coverage. On the positive side, you can set a custom date and time instead of having to select predifined entries from a menu ...like in RIM! Wish more phones had this function! All in all, Id say it overpriced ...and antiquated ...though it does what little it does fairly well.

Definitely looks like moto's work ...at least from the pics ...even the specifications kinda match!
-
Hey no, I didnt know ...thanks for telling! Have used/handled very few models in real... As for the cut/copy/paste ...even Moto SLVR L7 can do it. Dont know if L2 and L6 can do it though. L7 is not too bad with SMSing with a few quirks - you cant toggle delivery reports to "on" permanetly. The UI sure can be better, but its tolerable. Its the call register/logs that are HORRIBLE - missed calls are mixed with recieved calls and only the latest record for a particular number can be seen! Also, the ph isnt good for those who rely on their mobiles for time and date! Is this the case with all Moto phones? If yes, its a total deal breaker! Whats the NGage QD going for now? Isnt it mainly for gaming? About LG KG-110 ...unfortunately there is very little info online and hardly any good reviews. But for the price the specs seem the best! And its very light wt and slim. Check it out here. The manual suggests that sending SMS to multiple recipients is possible (dosen't say how many). For those who dont know - Airtel is selling this for about 2.4k with same Airtel-Airtel talk time, 2 yrs total validity ...and better tariff than RIM. Unfortunately seems LG isnt selling this seperately.

Reliance Communications Acquires 1.2 Million Subscribers In March 2007

Hehe, yes! But I might now contribute much longer to Airtel's ARPU, as just discovered that Idea has exactly the same scheme ...and since 75% of my addr book consists of Idea numbers, I can call/SMS them at 10p and save a packet! Seems to me that RCL's user base is likely to be lot more volatile if it consists mainly of the type you have defined. But it still beats me ...what to do with the 1.4 - 2 k RIM - RIM talk time? And I guess pay Rs. 1.79 to call other mobiles!? I guess ADA hallucinates about "poor auto, vegetable/fruit vendors, barbers, drainage cleaners etc" to earn him top ARPU??? The only lame offers I used to get from RIM, ie. bonus RIM - RIM talk time was going totally waste in my last few months with RIM as the already few people I know who owned a RIM moved to GSM. -
Thanks guys! Nokia 3120 looks nice ...but quoted at around 4k on ebay ...should of course get it cheaper at the local vendours but it will still be way over budget. Seems overpriced to me (like most Nokias) ...4k CSTN screen and v basic features for 4k??? Moto W205 seems nice with 64k CSTN screen ...and sanely priced. The 750 SMS capacity is simply awesome esp. in a low end phone! Wonder if others will ever provide this kinda memory! But since I already have a Moto, was hoping for something else... Still feel the LG KG-110 is the best value ...if I can get it at a good price minus the Airtel SIM... Anybody has any other ideas? Please, do suggest...

Hmm... if that is indeed the case ...its kinda like jugglery... Anyway, since the advantage of Reliance wrt. roaming is now a thing of the past, its very likely that those who were with RIM only due to this factor will shift to other operators ...and then I guess we will see a more realistic ARPU. -

What Reliance giveth, it shall *VERY* likely taketh away at whim... -
I don't think it will be exactly similar... for more than one reason ...but rather than speculate, it would be better if some users could please post their findings...
-
Dudes, if this is true, its really cool ....esp. for a Reliance phone! But lets not forget a phone is primarily for calls and SMSing ...can anybody comment on the phone's talktime and stand-by time? Thats what counts a whole lot more!

What is the rental in your circle? The rental for their plan here is about 150 ...and 50p call tariff ...thats more or less at par with what others are offering ...not great, not bad! But RIM post-paid here has no SMS pack!!! So SMS charge will be Rs. 1 & 2 for local and national! Totally unacceptable!! And those free 75 SMSes must be only in your circle. Here in Maharashtra circle, they ain't giving a single free SMS! Whats more they are asking for approx Rs. 350 to convert from pre-paid to post! Overall, I found it to be an unacceptable deal... Whats more, note that Reliance has always been giving only local SMSes with its pre-paid SMS packs ...when most other operators are giving national SMSes! SDCA = Short Distance Charging Area. It is roughly the same as a Tehsil or a part of a district. Bombay for eg. is an SDCA. -

Sad to read that an operator with one of the worst service standards and tariffs has amongst the highest ARPUs... -
Hey, that was more of a joke than as a serious/concrete statement! In fact it was more of a question rather than a statement ...notice the "?" mark? But I think it has an element of truth! Its more than likely that some distraught RIM customer bumps into RIMweb mainly because of problems ...or is looking for info, etc ...and gets hooked to other things! I guess I myself would fall into that catageory... Anyway, what seems to be the reason that other operators dont have such active forums? Or are there any that I dont know about?
-
Speed difference will be noticed only when your system initially queries OpenDNS, when you request a new website... After that the DNS server has no role to play. If your ISP has a fast enuf DNS server, then OpenDNS may not help ...as a local server will have much lower latency (depends on ur ISP) than a remote server like OpenDNS. Also, ensure that its really the OpenDNS server thats being used for querying ...and not your ISP's server. Just changing the DNS server did not work in my case... so confirm using the method described on OpenDNS's website.

FWIW, & for those intrested in changing to another provider - I just got to know that Idea Cellular is offering EXACTLY the same plan as the Airtel Friendz pre-paid plan!!! In short, you can call other Idea cell phones at 10 paise per min between 3-5 pm and 10-8 am. Idea-Idea SMS is 10 paise and Idea - Other is 25 paise. Can call 5 local Idea numbers at 10 paise/min throught the day, etc, etc. In short everthing seems to be exactly like Airtel's Friendz plan. Best thing I was told is that you can load a Rs. 57 STV and calls to other mobiles would be 50paise/min! The Rs. 30 & Rs. 50 offer for 500 and 1000 SMSes, respectively cannot be combined with this plan. This is as told by Idea customer service (please verify). Idea Cellular's website however, should get the "Most Useless Website" award ...as it has absolutely no details of the latest plans nor of current handset bundle offers, etc, etc! I think the heading of this thread should be changed from "...why we should switch to Tata" to "...why we should switch to another service provider" as almost all operators currently seem to have better tariffs than RIM.
-
I know that all Indian operators are (very) far from perfect! Reliance used to be actually reliable once upon a time (at least for voice calls) ...but right now its gone to the dogs! At least with my BSNL landline and Airtel, I'v never experienced such network failures! And lately even though my RIM used to show full coverage, I was constantly getting complaints that my ph isnt reachable! And I wont even start about problems with SMSes... am sure you all have experienced similar things... And about RIMweb being the only strong forum of the kind, mebbe its because RIM users have maximum problems ..coupled with almost non-existent customer care?
-
I dont understand - why dont some of you guys get off RIM and ease their heavy network burden??? You create the situation and then crib and gripe at poor Reliance...!
-
Oh, EVDO and OFDMA and all is kiddy stuff for us glorious Indians ...after all, we are grappling with ultra high tech facilities like Call Waiting, normal texting, Voice Mail, balance inquiry, and the like...
-
Reliance is truly blessed!

On the other hand it could warn users not to use such sites! I'v always had a dislike for everthing about Indiatimes... one of the most unprofessionaly designed sites. The chat espeically, should get the 1st prize for worst java applet in the world!
