GSM ops certainly seem to be giving a much better deal ...what with 30p SMSes and now even low calling rates! Not to mention other major advantages like own handset, etc, etc... At this moment, RIM just dosent seem attractive enuf. Only good thing is I'm happy with the coverage in Poona, and no network congestion. Thats not right ...at least BSNL gives the same validity period ...and MUCH lower call and SMS rates. Not too sure about other operators, so won't comment. Besides Reliance is itself proving that it can't be trusted too much with anything ...something being offered right now wont be tommorrow ...and you'll be left holding a useless handset, if you want to opt out.

Pretender, I discovered EXACTLY that last night, and it worked fine! Since it was real late, I didn't post... I'm trying again now ...guess it should work! Maybe we should now make an online collection of these =< 4096 kB Midi files that we make, as there are hardly any files of these size on the net. Also seems all midis dont make good ringtones as what sounds pretty good on the comp speakers dosent sound half as good on the RD 2030. Anyway, thanks a heap guys...

Files are same as those I found on RIMweb itself ...as I couldn't find < 4 kB .mid files on the net. I tried with at least 3 - toxic.mid, myband.mid, imortal.mid, etc... I dont think posting them again here will be helpful, right?

Duh?! Of course I know about midis. Its a midi file (*.mid) that im sending ...not just renaming something else!!! And the files are playing fine on my comp ...just not playing or getting saved as ringtones on my phone! File sizes are exactly 4.01 kB. Thanks anyway Turbasu...

Its still not working on my RD 2030. Like I said, I can send an MMF from Yahoo, and it reaches my phone with the Midi attached (its about 4 kb, from Rimweb); but im unable to save it as a ringtone! Any suggestions guys?!

But are you able to save and use the midis sent as ringtones??? I'm not...

Bhuppy, it isn't there anymore! They suddenly and abruptly decided to discontinue it. I even gave helpdesk a piece of my mind ....just got the standard talk ...they wont even say whether its gone for good or its temporary...

But why would they need to block it??? My patience with RIM is wearing thin ...the more reasons RIM will give me to quit, the quicker I will ditch them...

Many people have faced this problem even with LG RD2030 handsets ...at least the initial lot. Fortunately, mine (11 months old now) gets slightly warm on extended usage ...and not even that on charging. But its the 1st time Iv heard that it gets so hot that it smells! If I were you I'd certainly take it to the LG service station and make a fuss...

So now we discover again that RIM overcharges bills and shortchanges SMSes (amongst other things)...

This really is a major drawback of RIM! Just yesterday, a friend of mine tired to send me a wonderful forward from a GSM phone with the size of about 3 SMSes (considering 160 as max). It simply didn't come through ...not even truncated! And he tried twice. This is a very significant flaw ...enough for SMS junkies to avoid RIM altogether! Why be stuck with 140 / 160 measly characters when GSM users can send several hundred characters in a single SMS??? Moreover, GSM ops have 30p SMS schemes; and also most RIM phones don't have group SMSing feature!

Never heard of it. And thats one more reason why I wouldn't buy it unless I at least hear very favourable reviews...

I can sympathise with you Gtran users on other issues, but cant quite understand this attitude: prices of all cell phones have been dropping in the market, and keep dropping all the time ...just like computer hardware, etc! Contrary to this, if you guys expect prices of hardware to appreciate like real estate, RIM is hardly to blame. RIM had to reduce the prices to make the product competitive. One can only make a buying decision based on the prices prevailing at the time of purchase ...isn't that obvious? If you guys had found the product price to be uncompetitive, you should have refrained from buying it. And IMHO at 12,000 it was overpriced, and thats why I refrained. At 6,000 I was considering it, but after reading all this, I guess Im just going to stay faithful my RD2030 for sometime more. Can't really loose that way, as cell phones can only get better...

You have? Frankly dont remember ...just decided that time that Gtran isn't worth the money. With the current options, methinks currenly GSM handsets & schemes make lot more sense if one is to invest in an upgrade! Anyway, its good to see customers as "active" as yourself...

Frankly, I too was tempted to consider an upgrade to Gtran reading his reviews. But I didn't as I wouldn't purchase a product based just on one user's experiences! If you had seen the other reviews here and on mouthshut, and also RIM's reputation, you would probably (like me) have been saved from purchasing an expensive + buggy product...

Hope you know that u can send free SMS to some GSM ops thru email ...for eg. 9XXXXXXXX@bplmobile.com, etc. And you can send emails through R-World the the "Messaging" menu, ...but seems they have very recently removed this facility too... Anyway, you can send emails (& hence SMSes) thru R-World in other ways...

I seem to have discovered a new bug in the good old RD 2030! Used call waiting 1st time today - 2 friends called me and I shifted between their calls using the Call button. Now the call register in "Recieved calls" is showing exactly the same time duration (including seconds) for both calls! Obviously seems I'v discovered a new bug?

What is the source of the info in that Word file? Strange, cus Li-Ion batts are not supposed to suffer from memory problem. If this advice is for Ni-Cds, etc, then its understandable! Besides don't most of the chargers have a cut off which kicks into place once the batts are charged? If so, whats the difference in keeping a batt for charging for say 2 hrs (approx. time for full charging) or for 12 hrs?

What about pre paid users? Can they upgrade and keep their number this way?

Dogs are better as pets? That would be a moot point! But yes, generally dogs kinda demand more and give more. The RIM Kyocera 7135 will 'give' more than say the 2030, but will burn your pocket in the process! Respect? Would be intresting to go into why you really feel like getting a pet. People like dogs more cus they know how to polish the human ego ...otherwise cats have their own charm. Besides the cat would be a much better option as a prototype to a future gf!!! How 'intimate' you are with your pet depends more on you than the pet! My dog was a 'dog' (& a whole lot more) with me ...and a 'cat' to my dad!! And incidentally, my cat was a 'dog' with me and an alien to my dad... And lastly, I'd emphasise: Ask not what your pet will do for you, rather ask what you can do for it...

Guys, could you comment on the ring tone sound clarity of GTRAN, etc (anybody here has compared?)? I mean, like for eg. the RD 2030's ringtones sound a bit muffled as compared to the B/W Samsung's...

One more important issue - helpdesk says the new vouchers of Rs. 165 and 199 would not allow incoming calls after the validity period! That effectively means that incoming and outgoing calls would stop on the same day! And if you cant find the right voucher on the exact day it expires, you stand to loose important incoming calls too! Not a good option for most of us, I'm sure... Instead they should have launched vouchers with longer validity periods of 1 year etc, like what BSNL has done!

A canine, esp. a puppy is just a wee bit less demanding than a human kid! Unless you are in a position to make that kind of commitment, you should reconsider. My dog was my entire family's baby, and I can't imagine me alone having taken care of it ...not with college, work and all. Besides dogs don't make very good pets for small apts ...and they abs. hate being left alone ...and will raise hell if kept that way, esp. for extended periods of time. So do consider these points. Perhaps you would be much better off with a cat. They are FARRRR less demanding.
