Infocomm Launches Sierra Wireless Data Cards

On October 6, 2004, Reliance Infocomm launched the Reliance Sierra Wireless Data Cards with a view to offering a better suite of wireless data access options to corporate customers. The sleek CDMA 1x RTT data and voice access card, manufactured by the Vancouver based Sierra Wireless Inc, comes with a detachable antenna and a headset. These wireless cards are preprovisioned and available to the customer immediately after the OTAF process. The customer can use the card anywhere across India on the Reliance CDMA network.

The cards allow customers to connect to the Internet, send and receive e-mails and SMS, and make voice calls, without having to use a network cable or phone line.

The data speed through this card ranges from 20 to 30 kbps during peak hours, to a maximum of 144 kbps at non-peak hours.

Reliance Sierra Wireless Data Cards are currently available only to corporate customers, both under outright purchase option at Rs 14,700 and on a deferred payment scheme (for listed corporate houses) for Rs 9,900 (along with equated monthly installments of Rs 550 for twelve months), as well as for an upfront payment of Rs 5,000 (with equated monthly installments of Rs 950 for twelve months). Subscribers of these cards can also choose monthly tariff plans according to their requirement, from Rs 200 for the Standard (Current) package, t o Rs 650 for the New Silver package, Rs 1,000 for the New Gold package, to Rs 1,500 for the Platinum Plan.

Reliance Infocomm has launched a wireless card, which can be slipped into the PCMCIA slot of a laptop or other devices for high-speed wireless connectivity to the internet, besides offering voice and short messaging service (SMS). This card is an extension of the R Connect Data card that Reliance Infocomm had launched earlier this year.

The Reliance Sierra Wireless card, which is the size of a credit card, facilitates Net connection on laptop computers with high download speeds up to 144 kbps. The special feature of this card is that it doubles a Reliance post-paid card.

Speaking to eFE, senior vice president, Reliance Infocomm, Lalit Sawhney said: "The wireless card can be used as a post-paid card. The card has a 'jack' in it, where one can insert a hands-free mobile phone. The card can then be inserted into the laptop which would have a dialer interface through which the customer can dial a number or send SMS. In the future, we will be launching it in the pre-paid category too."

The card works like a modem offering full value added features of a mobile phone such as call waiting, call forward, conference and voice mail. The software with the card also offers a range of features like phone book, call history, ring tones and security features like key guard and lock code.

Priced at Rs 14,700, the card is mainly targeted at the corporate customer who has to access the Net while on the move, Mr Sawhney said.

Reliance Infocomm is offering a deferred payment option for corporates under which the customer can make a down payment of Rs 5,000 and make a monthly payment of Rs 950 for a year. The card, which is being manufactured by the US company Sierra would be sold through the corporate sales team of Reliance Infocomm.
