Samsung Galaxy S And Tab Not Lined For ICS Update!

Recommended Posts

When Samsung announced the list of phones and tablets to get the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update, there were many questions of why certain models didn't make the cut. The originalGalaxy S for one was quite a surprise, since the nearly identicalNexus S is already getting the update.

Samsung issued an official statement explaining why the the I9000 Galaxy S and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 won't get to taste official ICS.

Both feature Samsung's TouchWiz customizations which run pretty deep (they include things like custom widgets, video calling and so on), and they also have country-specific customizations (like the ISDB-Tb Digital TV tuner for Brazil) along with carrier-mandated changes.

All those customizations will not run smoothly on the older hardware if ported to Ice Cream Sandwich, with limited RAM and ROM storage pointed out as problematic.

Samsung's statement talks only of the Galaxy S and the Tab 7.0, but other Galaxy phones that are not on the ICS update list most likely suffer from similar restraints so they'll remain on Gingerbread too.

Of course, there are plenty of third-party ROMs available out there that will put an unmodified Ice Cream Sandwich (that is no TouchWiz) on your Galaxy droid - we already tried one out and it worked rather well.

Remember how agonizingly long we had to wait to get our Galaxy S phones - Epic, Fascinate, Captivate, etc updated to Android 2.2 Froyo. It seems Sammy is purposefully avoiding the phones so that they can sell more of their next-generation phones.

P.S Apple is way better is this regard! The latest iOS 5 is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and the third generation iPhone 3GS.

i wonder if nexus s and galaxy s and even epic share almost the same hardware why couldnt they just make touchwiz li8 versions so that they can save battery power and speed up the performance ?? they dont people to stick to their galaxy s line up, they want their new dual core phone to be sold and used by the people ?? but for how long, quad core processors are on their way to conquer the mobile phone industry ?? they they will say that samsung galaxy s2 is "incompatible" with android next "light" versions of android

samsung "shame on you !!!"

ya thats true, but still an official update is always better right, if samsung cannot update why dont they help developers by providing codes like sony ericsson is doing with cyanogen mods

If they update old ones then who will buy new ones? It's all money, honey!

Now it seems Samsung is backpedaling on their earlier decision and re-examining their stance on updating the original Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab after our outcry. There is hope still :victory:
