This is India.... India is set to miss the deadline for the launch of commercial 3G services yet again. The ministry of defence has informed the Department of Telecom that the armed services would require additional time, up to 390 days, to vacate the 45 MHz spectrum which it currently occupies.Of the 45 MHz, 25 MHz will be given to a maximum of five operators (through a bidding process) for the launch of 3G services while the remaining would be used for 2G services. The delay means that 3G services will now be launched only in early ’08 instead of the second half of ’07. This is the second time when the joined efforts of defence and telecom ministries have failed to vacate the 3G spectrum within the set deadline. Government sources said the primary reason for the defence ministry seeking more time was due to BSNL’s and MTNL’s failure to complete the Rs 980 crore alternative optic fibre backbone for the armed forces as per schedule. According to government sources, the current project schedule envisaged the completion of cabling at priority 60 airforce access locations by August ’06, final completion of cabling (except inaccessible points) by October 15, finalisation and awarding of tender for equipments by August 20, supply and installation of equipment in the airforce locations by September 30, remaining locations by November 30 and completion of the project by December ’06. Besides, ITI was to deliver encrytor prototypes in three phases for this project by January ’07, thus enabling the defence to vacate the spectrum by March ’07. “Work on this project has begun only now — even the completion of cabling at priority 60 airforce accesses, whose deadline was August ’06, is not yet over,” government sources added. Sources also pointed out this project has been delayed despite the government setting up 3 committees to oversee its execution — a steering committee with representatives from the defence services, BSNL, MTNL and the DoT to guide project implementation, a project implementation committee for monitoring and co-ordination and another committee to ensure the resolution of all security and data related issues. Due to high spectrum price monopoly of Qualacom costly equipments even European countries are avoiding it Let us talk about WI MAX already launched in Chennai by Air cel It is covering 70% of Chennai area and few thousands customers are trying its beta verson within 3 months it will cover whole Chennai. Arun 795 Report post Posted November 23, 2006 WiMax Forum warns India to sort out spectrum confilcts for WiMax The WiMax Forum India could miss the wireless broadband revolution unless it reallocates spectrum in the 2.5- to 2.69-GHz band for WiMax services, the WiMax Forum has warned. But that spectrum is used by the country's Department of Space for its Insat satellites, and DoS is refusing to vacate it. "For successful WiMax deployment, spectrum needs to be allocated in the 2.5-GHz band, but in India there are issues with its satellites," Ron Resnick, chairman and president of the WiMax Forum, was quoted as saying in a report Wednesday (Nov. 15) in The Economic Times (New Delhi). The 2.5-GHz frequency is used globally for WiMax services, but the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has instead recommended 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.3- to 3.4-GHz band for the service. That proposal has also encountered resistance, however, since DoS controls the 3.4- to 3.6-GHz band as well. The WiMax Forum, meanwhile, objects to the TRAI recommendation that each service provider be given only a 15-MHz channel for broadband. "We feel that India should go for a 20-MHz channel, which is the minimum channel requirement. Globally, WiMax equipment is configured to work on 20-MHz channels," Resnick said. anujit 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 3G isnt a failure at all. It's adoption rate was slower than expected thats all. Now all the major US carriers offer EVDO or HSDPA for high speed access.
