Virgin Reduces Get Paid On Incoming Benefit

New customers on all profiles effective 29th March’09 will get GPRC benefit on incoming calls at the rate of 5paise for every 60 seconds incoming ·

Existing Virgin mobile brand customers who have completed 6 months will get 5paise credit on every 60 seconds incoming ,effective 1st May’09 ·

Remaining customers will start getting the revised benefit (of 5p credit on incoming calls ) as and when they complete 6 months with us.

This is due to the reduction in termination fee I am sure. I had anticipated in this forum that Virgin might do away with this benefit of get paid on incoming. They have reduced it from 10 paise to 5 paise.

Very smart but dirty move from Virgin, the reduction in IUC has been implimented for incoming benefit but there has been no reduction in the outgoing charges. Logically, when the IUC has been reduced, virgin will have to pay 10 paise less to the terminating operator and this benefit has not been passed on to the customer yet, could be they might do it in due course, but idally it should have been simaltaneously.

How will they reduce when the biggies have not come forward and moreover BSNL/MTNL have already opposed this move of TRAI to reduce the termination charges...

Richard Brandson’s Virgin Mobile is likely to roll back the much-hyped 10 paisa incoming offer. This comes after the 33 per cent reduction in termination charges for domestic calls announced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last month.

Under new in-connection usage, termination charges on all types of domestic calls has been reduced from 30 paisa to 20 paisa per minute.

The 10 paisa incoming offer was introduced by Virgin for the first time in the country, under which a subscriber would earn 10 paisa per minute for receiving calls. With the reduction in domestic termination charges, the operator is likely to withdraw this offer.

A person close to the development told Financial Chronicle that Virgin was planning to withdraw this offer. “Till now the operator has been earning 30 paisa per minute on the calls terminating on its network, but with the new regulation in place, the operators have been losing out the revenues from the termination calls. In case of Virgin’s offerings, the operator has been sharing 10 paisa from the 30 paisa earning on each call. But now the earnings from the call termination has been reduced to 20 paisa per minute, which is forcing the operator to roll back this offer,” he said.

Another person in the loop said that Virgin was looking at a change in the incoming offer. He said that they operator was likely to cut down the 10 paisa per minute offer and launch another scheme with lower earning offer. The company’s official spokeperson declined to comment.

Virgin Mobile started operations in India in March 2008, with partnership with Tata Teleservices on a franchisee model. Virgin Mobile services are being supported from nine centres across nine cities and have bench strength of more than 450 personnel. The company has rolled out its services in 250 towns and is targeting to expand to 1000 towns.

The 5 paise benefit for every minute’s incoming call will be credited now only after six months with Virgin. Existing customers in this category will get the credit from May 1.

Speaking to Business Standard earlier, M A Madhusudan, CEO, had said that Virgin would always stick to its unique selling point of paying the customer for incoming calls and would never do away with the scheme entirely.

He said, “Importantly, despite the changes, we will not make it zero, so that customers continue to get the benefit since even today no one (other than us) offers this service.”

Agreeing that margins might get affected, Madhusudhan said, “If you look at our overall calls, initially, the number of incoming calls was more. As the subscriber base has grown overall, it has almost become 50-50. So, if my 30 paise has gone down, my outflow has also increased by the same. So, in terms of the financial impact, it is not a big negative.”

Virgin has reduced incoming charges but none of the operators have reduced call charges due reduction in termination charges.

if i am not wrong, TRAI has not forced any operators to reduce tariff due to reduction in termination charges, tariff reduction decision is up to the operator now.. i think operators are trying to reduce tariff indirectly by introducing new boosters, packs, offers etc instead of a direct reduction in rates...

the problem is no operators want to reduce tariff now.. if any one reduces then it will force others too to reduce.. everyone wants to earn amap now and hesitates to step forward in tariff reduction...
