Updated : Mtnl Launches 3g Services In Delhi !

Recommended Posts

I could roam on 3G network of MTNL in Delhi with BSNNL UPE prepaid connection. But there seems to be some problem with signalling gateway. I could make the calls (outgoing), send and receive the SMSs. But when someone dials for me (incoming calls), he gets the message that the number does not exist. The voice quality is good.

MTNL to launch 3G mobile services on February 5

4 Feb 2009, 2047 hrs IST

State-owned telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) will become the first telco to launch third-generation (3G) mobile services

commercially on Thursday. The launch comes in the backdrop of delays in rollout of 3G services by private operators with the 3G policy being referred to a group of ministers (GoM).

Auction for 3G spectrum was earlier delayed due to differences between the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the finance ministry over the base price and the number of 3G operators in each circle.

MTNL competes with private firms, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular and Tata Teleservices, in India. State-owned telcos MTNL and BSNL were given 3G spectrum last year before the private players, giving them the first mover's advantage. MTNL has earlier said it would offer 3G services free to its high-spending mobile customers initially.

3G services on a mobile phone will allow customers to access the Internet and data applications at speeds of up to 2 megabytes per second. Mobile users will have access to advanced services such as video calls, broadband wireless data, faster online video streaming and a better gaming experience. Currently all mobile services are provided over the second generation (2G) network. MTNL's 3G services have been christened MTNL 3G Jadoo.

Motorola is setting up the core network for MTNL for this launch. Initially, services will be launched in central Delhi, including Connaught Place, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate and Minto Road. The services will later be extended to Gurgaon. BSNL is also expected to launch commercial 3G services soon.

Tariffs will not fall. I am sure they are going to go up. These are promotional tariff, which by nature are always less expensive (that is why they are promotional in the first place). MTNL has not paid any price for the 3G spectrum it got. It will have to match the price which is quoted by the successful bidders for 3G spectrum in Delhi, and then I am sure they will have to increase their tariff. MTNL must focus on 2G before it starts its 'adventure'. Even the promotional tariff are so high that its out of reach of a lot of prospective subscribers. I have this odd feeling that 3G is going to fall flat in India.

The high-speed data transfer enables live TV, fast internet connectivity & file downloads, and high-quality voice calls. Most of the new advanced mobile phones available in India support 3G, though 3G is mostly in its infancy in India. Even after 3G becomes commonplace, it will take time for the services and applications for a 3G environment to take off in India.

Private telecom operators currently providing 2G telecom services in Mumbai include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone-Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Indicom, Loop Mobile (BPL Mobile),Aircel and TATA DoCoMo. For these mobile service providers, 3G spectrum is still a long way off.
