Skype comes to the iPhone

Instant messaging wish granted

iPhone fans are set have their wish granted, with the news that a German firm has developed an application that brings Skype functionality to the device.

One of the complaints that users of the hybrid phone and MP3 player had was relating to its instant messaging functionality, or lack thereof. German firm Shape Media has stepped in to fill the gap.

The application, dubbed "IM+ for Skype", transforms the iPhone into a Skype handset. The web application, which works through the iPhone's Safari web browser, allows iPhones to use the Skype messaging service along with its Voice over IP (VoIP) network.

By logging on to skypeforiphone.com, users can access their Skype account, allowing them to make free Skype to Skype calls, and use their SkypeOut credits to make calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world. According to Shape Media, the application will work across different networks and does not require Wi-Fi to operate.

The application was designed for use with the iPhone's touchscreen, and has the added benefit of offering more cost-effective call charges than many carriers, for both landline and mobile calls - domestic and overseas.

Similar software has already been developed for platforms such as Windows Mobile, RIM's Blackberry, Palm and Symbian devices.

iPhone: A Tempting Target to Malware Makers

The bugs found on the Windows version of Safari may affect the iPhone as loopholes in one version can easily be located on another. Furthermore, the iPhone runs on Mac OS X, which has several security issues of its own and it is likely that these will be encountered in the iPhone. These vulnerabilities may offset Apple's closed platform strategy, as they provide hackers with material to explore.

iPhone Unlocked!

Ladies and gentlemen; it's finally here. The first software only unlocking of the iPhone!

The iPhoneSIMfree.com team has formally announced this on their website and has gotten Engadget, to endorse this! This solution allows you to choose the provider you want in any country and use their SIM. Obviously, no more outrageous roaming charges for the restless ones out there. Time for me to wipe the sweat from my palms and get some grip on a spanking new iPhone!

But don't whip out those credit cards yet. iPhoneSIMfree team has not released details as to how they intend to sell this solution - no information whether it'll be a bring-the-phone-to-us service or an IMEI based pass-code through email.

Seventeen Year Old Unlocks iPhone

It took a nerdy teenager, a soldering iron, and a couple of energy drinks to 'unlock' Apple Computer's iconic iPhone.

Seventeen-year old George Hotz from New Jersey spent 500-odd hours (an entire summer) trying to free the iPhone from AT&T's clutches.

Hotz posted the hack on his blog Thursday. Which could lead to the mushrooming of an entire industry devoted only to buying of iPhones, unlocking them, and selling them to people who don't have or don't want the AT&T service.

However, the hack is complicated and requires skill with soldering and software. A wrong step here or there could render the iPhone useless.

Apple Computer and AT&T refused to comment on Hotz' exploit.

An earlier method deployed to make the iPhone work overseas involves copying information from the SIM chip or Subscriber Identity Module. This method does not require any soldering expertise or special equipment.

Meanwhile, both hacks leave intact the iPhone's many functions, including built-in camera and ability to access Wi-Fi networks. By now both procedures have been publicly disclosed so Apple can get down to the task of modifying it's iPhones to making them immune to such hacks...

Hotz, who said he collaborated online with a large number of people to develop the unlocking process, put up his unlocked iPhone for sale on eBay on Thursday. The highest bid reportedly was $12,600 late Friday. The 4GB iPhone model actually sells for $499.

Apple to Launch 16GB, 3G iPhone?

It's not official, but leaked iPhone campaign ads from T-Mobile Germany portray a different story. The iPhone is not likely to be announced in Europe until November, but the grapevine has it that it's to be equipped with 3G, supporting both US-friendly HSDPA format and the Europe-specific UMTS. The leaked ad also claims a 16GB iPhone, with a 2MP camera in keeping with the version launched in the US.

According to the ad, the 3G iPhone will be priced at 499 Euros and will come with a coupon for the iTunes store. T-Mobile has obviously not confirmed any of this, but it's been seen posting text banners and product shots on its own website, as posted by

The Mumbai gray market seems to be brimming with the latest offerings in the market. You can get the iPhone (unlocked and running) for a whopping Rs. 52,000 :) Hopefully, seeing as only this morning some sleepless soul managed to make a hardware-free hacking method to unlock the phone, enthusiasts won't have to wait for a day at Heera Panna for the unlocking to happen.

iPhone Prices Nose-dive in Mumbai

The Apple iPhone was officially launched in the United States of America on June 29, 2007 and commanded a price of $599 (Rs. 23,621) for the 8GB version. By September 5, 2007 Apple had slashed the price of its 8GB model to $399 (Rs. 15,733) and dropped the 4GB version from its line-up.

Back home, dealers from Mumbai's Heera Panna market say that the iPhone will be officially launched in India in March or April 2008 but then again a not-so-little birdie told us that the iPhone will come to India in the end of 2008.

But a trip to Heera Panna, saw iPhones peering out of the windows of almost every electronics shop. A month back, the cost of the iPhone was a whopping Rs. 52,000. Today, iPhone fans can rejoice as the price of the iPhone in the grey market has dropped to a mere Rs. 27,000 for the 8GB model. The 4 GB version is available for Rs. 24,000. “We have only a few pieces of the 4GB model as people don’t mind shelling out Rs. 4,000 extra for the 8GB model. Moreover, the 4 GB version has been dropped from its line-up,” says Vikram of Sound Out, Heera Panna.

Another shopkeeper added that the stock they ordered a few days ago – 10 8GB models and four 4GB models just sold out and he was awaiting the next order. The volume of phones being sold is rising. Every shopkeeper has claimed to have sold more than 50 iPhones in the last two-three weeks. “We are going to order for more iPhones as we expect the sales to increase during Diwali,” says one shopkeeper. The shopkeepers also unlock the phone for no extra charge.

The slash in iPhone prices have surely brought good news to iPhone fans who can now make their dream of owning one a reality.

Apple to Allow Outside Applications on iPhone

Apple Inc Chief Executive Steve Jobs said on Wednesday that outside developers will be allowed to create programs for the iPhone, changing a policy that had angered many.

Blocking outsiders from making programs that would run easily on the iPhone has been one of a series of restrictions that have annoyed users, even leading to some lawsuits.

Jobs, in comments on Apple's Web site, said a kit for developers still will not be available until February, as the company works out how to open up the phone without exposing it to malicious programs.

"We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones," Jobs said on the Web site at http://www.apple.com/hotnews/.

Developers have tried to open up the iPhone for use in the United States on networks beyond Apple's U.S. partner, AT&T Inc, though Apple has blocked many such moves. Spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said Apple has not changed its policy on locking the phone to other networks.

But until now, Apple also had stopped software engineers from creating whatever they wanted to run on the iPhone, without delivering them through the iPhone's Web browser.

Some 200 applications have been created for use on those terms, but consumers and software makers have seen that as an extra layer of rules and technology that was unnecessary and throttled innovation.

Under the new policy, applications will be allowed to run in so-called native mode.

Jobs said he expects malicious developers to focus on the iPhone. "Since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target," he said.

Apple could require a digital signature for programs to authenticate their developer, he added, referring to a system that he said mobile phone maker Nokia is implementing.

While this makes such a phone less than "totally open, we believe it is a step in the right direction," Jobs said.

According to Law any Handset Laucnhed into France must be Unlocked with 6 month from Sell date and if Apple Sell Locked one they should add more support personals to provide Unlocked Solution after 6 months which will raise Possibility to leaking of Unlocking Method of Iphone so Apple must have taken this Decision.

France was the main reason that why apple was not launching or Delaying Lauch of iPhone in Europe which is 100% Premium GSM Market.

Thanks steve. ( I was damn sure that Apple will Allow the Third Party Application bu only that Application which were Created by Apple own Development Suit so the Harmfull Programm and Virus can not damage the Phones Functionality. and it Happened)

Steve Job had said the Reason to not come with 3G is only 15 major USA city have 3G and that to have Range Problem. so doing so which drain Battery of Phone like anything pushing bigger battery might increase the weight and heating Problem.

And in GSM 3G chipsets deserve more patent related thing and is more Expensive too.

Hope in Future they cope up with these Problem and come with 3G iPhone.
