Reliance Communications To Start Providing Dual Band Handsets !

Recommended Posts

NDTV

Thursday, July 26, 2007 (New Delhi):

Anil Ambani may have stopped running after GSM spectrum but he hasn't slowed down on his plans to make Reliance Communication phones work anywhere in the country.

Reliance operates on the CDMA platform but 70 per cent of phones are on the rival GSM system and today there's no phone that can talk across both the platforms.

However that could change soon. Sources have told NDTV that Reliance Communication is importing phones that use two chips, one for CDMA and the other for GSM.

Reliance Communication has already tied up with suppliers and will launch these handsets in the next two months. With these handsets in the market, CDMA users will no longer be forced to use only one technology. They will be able to roam on GSM and it would be especially useful for those traveling to Europe.

Roaming advantage

Subscribers within the country will also be able to roam using GSM and Reliance's 3.5 million GSM subscribers in 8 telecom circles will be able to roam on its CDMA network across the country.

Interestingly, Reliance Communication is also looking at ways in allowing its subscribers freedom to use GSM networks of rivals as well. It plans to charge roaming rates from subscribers who may want to use other GSM networks. But bundled handsets will definitely have a lock-in period.

While Reliance Communication is still working out how it plans to leverage its dual chip handset, it will keep its fingers crossed that government rules on use of dual technology doesn't change. After all that's one of the important issues the telecom regulator TRAI is deliberating on.

^^^

That is preposterous, roaming charges while in home network? How can it be allowed at all? And TRAI / GOI / DOT has not barred anyone from offering dual technology phones. They cannot offer both technologies. This is what I understood from the earlier media reports, if I am not wrong. I think RCL is proposing to offer more as an international phone rather than a only India phone. Maybe this way the above roaming funda is valid.

Does the above also imply that what dual network handset sadiq is selling currently, is illegal to use?

Here is another news.....

New Delhi: Reliance Communications Ltd, India’s second largest wireless telecom services firm, plans to introduce phones that run on both the GSM and CDMA (the platform it uses) networks in a bid to attract customers reluctant to get stuck with one standard.

Of the around 180 million mobile phone customers in India, operators using GSM or global system for mobile communications technology, account for about 135 million. The rate of growth of GSM subscribers is higher, too, with industry leader Bharti Airtel Ltd and Vodafone Essar Ltd adding about 3.5 million users a month compared with the two million new customers at Reliance and fellow CDMA user Tata Teleservices Ltd.

CDMA stands for code division multiple access, a US-developed technology.

According to a Reliance executive who didn’t want to be named because the phone firm is yet to make an official announcement, the Mumbai-based company is set to introduce a low-priced, dual-mode phone over the next few days.

“With this, someone who buys our phone is not tied to our network or that of the CDMA operators,” said the executive who declined to provide specific price details but hinted that the phone will be an entry-level model. Reliance had, in May, offered CDMA phones for as little as Rs777 and notched up sales of one million handsets in the first week alone.

“Dual-band is a very nascent market,” said Nishna Biyani, research associate with Mumbai broker Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt. Ltd. “Since the possibility of switchover (by the customer to a rival network) cannot be ruled out, the possibility of subsidizing the cost of the handset is limited.”

Analysts point out that if the company targets the entry-level market, it will be a challenge to bring the price of a non-subsidized GSM-CDMA phone below the Rs1,000-1,500 entry- level prices for GSM-only phones. Meanwhile, handset manufacturer Spice Mobile Pvt. Ltd, part of the B.K. Modi group, will also launch such dual-mode phones this week costing around Rs10,000 each.

H.S. Bhatia, head of LG Electronics’ GSM operations in India, says that while it is popular in markets such as China, certain issues, including the size of the phone, will influence consumers.

Hey! Reliance people, are you sleeping?wake up man.pdf how the world is changing all around you.every ornpator is striving to provide better and better technology to their subscribers and spreading their network.but unfortunately reliance is not.they are lagging behind all in this regard.at least in orissa the network coverage is pathetic.while bsnl, airtel and the new aircel all have spread their network to even very small towns, reliance hasn't been able to cover high ways, not to speak of small towns.and the hand set issue, all of us know.every other operator is bringing latest feature rich handset and providing to their customers at reasonable price, but reliance is still obsessed with low end handsets.even tata is activating other foreign handsets in their network.where as handsets like ppc 6700 are grossly overpriced.if this continues the company will surely see the backs of most of its loyal customers like us.
