Firm Finds Firefox Gains, IE Loses Browser Market Share

The Firefox web browser has reached almost 16 percent market share in the U.S., while Microsoft's Internet Explorer has dropped below 80 percent market share, according to market intelligence firm OneStat.com.

On a worldwide basis, Firefox gained more than 1 percent market share during the month of May, according to OneStat.com, and was at almost 13 percent market share. IE registered 83.05 percent of the worldwide browser market share, according to the firm.

Another outfit, traffic measurement firm W3Counter, found even more momentum behind Firefox. W3Counter wrote, in releasing data yesterday, that Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 1.0 browsers combined for 25 percent of the entire browser market, while IE 6 and IE7 combined for 67 percent.

News of the new browser market share dynamics come as Mozilla, which develops Firefox, was gearing up to release the beta version of its Firefox 2.0 browser. Earlier this year, Microsoft released a beta version of IE 7 that included some previous, popular functions of Firefox including tabbed browsing for the first time.

I've had FF vs IE flame wars with Microsofties and I'll tell ya one thing they are stupid. They wont change no matter what. I had this flame war when IE7 was no where on M$'s agenda! And still the guy kept justifying how IE was better than FF. He was plain stupid

Firefox usage continues to increase - IE down again

The latest browser market share stats from OneStat.com show that Firefox's usage share continues to gain on Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Firefox now has a total global usage share of 12.93 percent, up 1.14 percent from May 2006. Meanwhile the total global usage share of Internet Explorer is 83.05 percent, down 2.12 percent from May. The stats are even more impressive in certain European and Asia-Pacific countries. In Australia, Firefox has 24.23% of the market. For World Cup champions Italy it's 20.41% and in Germany it's a whopping 39.02%!

The little browsers, Apple Safari, Opera and Netscape, seem destined to settle for niche markets from here on out - e.g. Opera is doing very nicely in the mobile market.

Of course both Microsoft and Mozilla have major new versions of their browsers due out this year - IE7 and Firefox 2.0. The competition is only going to heat up!

Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 7 Final (IE7)

Version 7 of Microsoft's dominant Web browser packs in interface changes, many new features, and plenty of under-the-hood updates. It also arrives just before version 2 of the up-and-coming Firefox browser, which may be just days away. So which new browser is your best bet?

Firefox 2 offers no radical changes compared with version 1.5, which came out a year ago. It's a measured step, purposely non-jarring for current Firefox users. A built-in antiphishing tool makes its first appearance, but most other changes simply refine many of the same features that are new to IE 7. Version 2 polishes tabbed browsing, newsfeed support, and add-on management. Regrettably, you'll still find some sites written specifically for IE that don't look right in Firefox 2. However, you can add a plug-in that will let you view a site in IE to get around the problem; my favorite is IE View. You can download a near-final release candidate 3 today. The final version should be available at the same site within a week, and existing users of the browser will receive a notice about version 2 once Mozilla has made a minor update to version 1.5 a few weeks after version 2 is out.

Microsoft had further to go to bring IE up to par with the competition (IE 6 was released in 2001), and so IE 7 is a more thorough overhaul of its predecessor. You can't miss the new user interface, with tabbed browsing, integrated searching, and newsfeed support. Microsoft also added an antiphishing tool and boosted IE 7's security in response to seemingly never-ending IE 6 holes.

Microsoft will also begin distributing Internet Explorer 7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates in November 2006. A final version for Windows Vista will ship with Vista early in 2007

Firefox 2.0 is almost here, and Microsoft is expected to start pushing out Internet Explorer 7 to users via the Windows Automatic Update software-distribution mechanism by year's end. In short, the browser wars are about to begin again.

Depending on whose numbers you believe, Firefox has been continuing to erode IE's lead.

According to Janco Associates, Internet Explorer has continued to lose market share in 2006. It bottomed out to 75.88 percent share in July, which was down from 77.01 percent in January, and from 84.05 in July of 2005.

OneStat.com, meanwhile, reported earlier this week that the global usage share of IE has grown to 85.85 percent. That's a jump of 2.8 percent since July, by their counting. Firefox, on the other hand, is at 11.49 percent, a decrease of 1.44 percent since the web analytics specialist reported its July data. The rest of IE's gain came at the expense of Opera and the other browsers.

NetApplications, however, sees a very different picture. According to Ars Technica's reporting, IE hit a two-year low at 82.10 percent in September, while Firefox grew to a 12.46 percent market share. Safari, the Mac OS X browser, came in third with 3.53 percent.

As for Linux and browsers, DesktopLinux's recent survey of Linux users found that Mozilla's Firefox browser dominates the field. Firefox came in with 58.2 percent usage, followed by Konqueror at 16.3 percent, and Opera at 12 percent. Of all the other browsers, only Mozilla, at 4.7 percent and Epiphany, GNOME's default browser, at 2.7 percent, grabbed more than 2 percent of the users.

With new browser versions coming out from both Mozilla and Microsoft in the coming weeks, however, we can expect to see dramatic changes in the overall browser market.

Firefox 2.0 coming your way on Tuesday

The world's second most used Web browser is set to unleash the final build of its new version on Tuesday. Firefox 2.0, from the not for profit open source Mozilla Foundation, will be available for download from the Firefox website at getfirefox.com.

Users of the current version of the browser Firefox 1.5 will find that not much has changed as far as the user interface is concerned**. There have been some improvements with the tabs feature, such as enabling users to close and reopen individual tabs more easily and a history list of previous tabs that have been opened.

Mozilla is also touting the anti-phishing security feature Firefox 2.0, which warns users in advance when they look like they might be visiting a malicious web page. IE7 released last week also has a similar feature.

Looking at the new Firefox and IE7 versions, the two browsers are now much closer in functionality than previously. What's more IE7 will be pushed out to existing IE6 users with the next round of automatic updates in November.

The question on the lips of many market watchers is whether Firefox can continue to take market share off Microsoft's browser now that the gap has been closed.

Firefox 2.0 hits FTP earlier than expected

Firefox 2.0 will be officially released tomorrow, but we have spotted what looks to be the official release in a newly-created directory on the Mozilla Foundation's FTP servers. This comes one week from the release of Firefox 2.0's third release candidate. The latest version of Mozilla's open source browser offers aesthetic enhancements, usability improvements, and an assortment of useful new features, including support for built-in spell-checking, phishing protection, Javascript 1.7, and session persistence. Although the new features incorporated into the upcoming release are fewer and less impressive than in previous releases, Firefox 2.0 is a solid incremental improvement over the 1.5.x series.

Hot on the heels of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 release, Firefox 2.0 ensures that the increasingly popular open source browser can remain competitive when compared with its newly enhanced rival. We reviewed a Firefox 2.0 release candidate earlier this month, and pointed out that renewed competition has promoted mutual innovation and a better Internet experience for all users, regardless of their browser choice.

Firefox marketshare has steadily climbed, and presently rests on a plateau between 10 and 15 percent, depending on whom you ask. Will the improvements in the latest release help the browser to continue its climb, or will Microsoft's browser continue to retain its dominant position in the wake of its recent considerable overhaul? To close the gap, Mozilla will have to get its own icon on Windows desktops by cultivating relationships with OEMs, ISPs, and computer distributors.

Planned for May 2007, Firefox 3.0 will include the Gecko 1.9 HTML rendering engine which features Javascript 2, XBL 2, Cairo rendering support, and numerous other improvements.

Browser war begins; IE 7, Firefox 2 claim win in initial round

Both Microsoft Corp, and the Mozilla Foundation have released updated versions of their respective web browsers and the browser battle has just begun. While Mozilla came out with its Firefox 2 with upgraded security features, a new interface and other facilities like a spell check, improved tabs, etc., Microsoft too has shown it continues to enjoy its unique position in the browser segment as the IE7 too has incorporated new features.

Some analysts monitoring the launch of the two browsers say Firefox had an early lead in the download race. Firefox developer Mike Beltzner too has said more than two million people are today using Firefox 2, and Mozilla Foundation is seeing a peak rate of more than 30 downloads per second from its website.

In the case of IE 7, there were some three million downloads in about four days, according to group program manager at Microsoft Tony Chor.

Microsoft has improved the IE, adding tabbed browsing and features such as subscribing to RSS feeds within the browser. Both Firefox 2 and IE 7 have anti-phishing protection and user interface enhancements.

Meanwhile, security experts have pointed out that there are bugs in both the browsers. At least two have been reported for Firefox 2, which reportedly lead to the browser crashing. Mozilla Foundation has said one of the bugs does not exist while the other cannot be easily exploited.

IE 7 too has at least two security flaws, which expose users to phishing attacks. Experts say the browser allows a website to display a pop-up that can contain a fictitious address. An attacker can exploit this to trick people into believing they are on a trusted website when in fact they are viewing a malicious page.

Two Million Firefox 2.0 Downloads in First 24 Hours

Firefox 2 is reported to have over 2 million downloads in the first 24 hours with demand as high as 30 downloads a second at times. The Firefox team is well on the way to overshadowing the 3 million in 4 days that downloaded IE7. It takes a few days to update the statistics, as they need to get the figures in from the mirror sites, the company said.

Of course download statistics don’t equal users. Some people may need to download the browser simply to test their web sites with, others may be curious to try the browser out but then go back to their usual browser, others may download multiple copies for multiple machines and others may just download one copy and share it with many.

However, one thing the statistics show is that interest in Firefox 2 remains strong, although the download figures will spike in IE’s favour once the automatic updates kick in during November, reads the post over at Browser Den.

According to Kelson, It's also interesting to compare the Firefox download statistics to the initial IE7 download statistics. Going by downloads alone (2M/day vs. 0.5M/day), one would expect Firefox to be more popular. His three reasons are:

* Firefox users tend to be more opinionated about their browser than IE users seem to be. 'It works' is about as enthusiastic as most IE users seem to get. This is the target audience for automatic updates next month.

* Firefox probably has a higher concentration of technical/power users than IE, making them both more comfortable upgrading and more interested in upgrading.

* Since IE is so tied into the operating system, there's a greater risk of breaking something. Caution is warranted, especially since there are actual Microsoft products that don't work well with IE7 (older versions of Visual Studio, for instance), so there's probably a big 'wait and see' crowd. Come to think of it, this is the target audience for the IE7 blocker kit.

IE7 Downloaded Three Million Times in Four Days

Does this mean that Firefox is well on track to beat IE7's three million in four days. Microsoft had revealed that Internet Explorer 7 had been downloaded three million times in the first four days. Early next month, customers will begin receiving IE7 automatically, at which time adoption numbers will escalate as per sources.

Microsoft has bought up radio spots and employed mobile billboards in ten cities across the United States. The new browser brings added security, tabbed browsing and built-in RSS support, and is currently available for Windows XP SP2. "Of course, we’re not done with IE7 yet. Next up are the localised versions of IE7 for Windows XP and, of course, IE7 in Windows Vista," said Tony Chor, IE7 group program manager.

Microsoft's servers are buckling under the number of downloads and new installations of IE 7. As a result, some people who install it get an error when viewing the IE 7 start page after firing up the browser for the first time, the company had said.

A Microsoft representative said, "We're seeing such an incredible response to IE 7, that the 'runonce' page is being overloaded at times. Microsoft is currently adding server capacity. We expect the majority of people who are downloading IE 7 to have a good experience but will continue to monitor and adjust our capacity as needed."

Firefox 2.0, IE 7 Post Gains

Mozilla's Firefox browser continued to erode Microsoft's Internet Explorer market share during November, a Web metrics company said Wednesday, even as IE 7 gained momentum.

According to Net Applications, the open-source Firefox grabbed another half a percentage point of usage share last month, accounting for 13.5% of all browsers, up from October's 12.96%. Internet Explorer's share, meanwhile, fell from 81.28% to 80.56%. If current trends continue, IE will have lost 5 percentage points during 2006 and will likely dip under 80% for the first time in more than six years.

Apple Computer's Safari posted a tenth of a percent gain in November, while Opera's share increased by 0.06%.

The release of IE 7 and Firefox 2.0, Mozilla's October update, have begun to affect usage, Net Applications' data showed. IE 7 use, which Microsoft is currently pushing to users via its Automatic Updates security update service, nearly tripled in November to 8.84% of all browsers, compared to only 3.18% in October. Mozilla's Firefox 2.0 boosted its share five-fold over the previous month's; it accounted for 3.61% of November's usage, but just 0.69% of October's.

Compenn: All netbanking sites work fine with with FF (at least all the major ones). I've used it with ICICI, HSBC, Citi, HDFC and Stan Char (which was the only one that objected to FF) has now started supporting it.
