Though voice/data tariff is very good in MTS, they have very high ROAMING charges, even in the circles where MTS is operating...

TTSL shut down its operations in Jammu & Kashmir, North-East and Assam circles on January 18, 2013 as it does not have spectrum to operate in these areas.
TTSL’s three circles of J&K, North-East and Assam were among the 122 telecom permits that the Supreme Court cancelled in February last year 2012. Around 3.2 lakh subscribers in the three circles, TATA still did not bid for buying spectrum in these areas during auction, price too high for them! bidders were TTSL and Videocon in CDMA spectrum auction but both withdrew left no one on 800 Mhz band.
As operations closed all three circles with effect from January 18, 2013, now customers will now have to switch to other operators incase they like to continue retaining their CDMA handsets /mobiles /EVDO data services then choice is none other than BSNL CDMA for migration in BSNL JK, North East circles In case of EVDO data card it will be a new subscription or only option complete shift to GSM using MNP :bash:

But I always had better service in TATA rather than reliance. Reliance always been weak with their signals ... Never had any trouble with my dad's tata indicom connection .. good signals in kerala, chennai and hyderabad

As far as my opinion, MTS has best coverage in Kolkata, following Reliance and Tata Indicom. But in remote WB Reliance CDMA coverage is not so good, MTS rocks there too.

I am using TATA Indicomm (now TATA DOCOMO CDMA) from last 3 years and absolutely no problem in Hyderabad. Excellent coverage as long as Hyderabad is considered as I have never been outside of the city. TATA DOCOMO GSM, well, ver very weak signal strength no matter what handset you use. Idea is much better regarding coverage in this city but their CC (Customer Care Service) is pathetic. TATA CDMA has coverage in areas all around city where Idea and TATA GSM both fail.

If OP wants call quality, then he can go for CDMA. If he wants mobiles with features and flexibility at lesser price then I think he must use GSM. 2nd, Qualcomm has stopped all development of UMB (Ultra Mobile Band a.k.a 4G/CDMA) and has favored 4G/LTE which is based on GSM/UMTS network. Hence most probably future will be GSM based
