They better announce MNP won't come to India, then many waiting customers can atleast change number + service provider instead of keep waiting and using the service half-heartedly...

I guess they won't say that either... because many, many people are just waiting in hope. If they announce, many of them may change operators asap. I know so many people who are just waiting, waiting, waiting...    :GirandoOjos:

I stopped waiting long ago...

BSNL could miss MNP 2nd deadline

State-run telco BSNL has informed the DoT that it may miss even the March 31 deadline for implementing the mobile number portability (MNP) regime if it does not get the security clearance to import the needed equipment at the earliest.

It has also sought intervention of the DoT to expedite the security clearance process to import MNP infrastructure so that it could meet the second deadline set by the government.

Mobile number portability (MNP) allows cellphone users to change their operators without changing the numbers.

"We would like to bring to your kind notice that BSNL has not been able to place purchase orders for MNP gateway for want of security clearance," the PSU telco said in a letter to the Department of Telecom.

BSNL said it has submitted technical details to DoT on its MNP infrastructure and is still awaiting security nod before placing purchase orders.

The Government had earlier set December 31, 2009 as deadline for implementing the MNP regime in the four metros, and June 2010 for the rest of the country.

However, this deadline could not be met after many operators informed DoT that they would require more time to upgrade their networks.

BSNL, MTNL ready to meet march 31 deadline for MNP

State-run telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) will be ready to implement the mobile number portability (MNP) service by the new deadline of March 31.

“There will be no delay from our side. We are very keen on this service as it will help us in garnering more subscribers,” BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goel told Business Standard. He said the PSU is ready with its network on both services — GSM as well as CDMA. The company was waiting for clearance of equipment for setting up gateways from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which has now come through. “We will place orders for setting up gateways within a day or two,” Goel said.

A senior MTNL official also said the company would be ready to implement MNP on schedule. “We will issue purchase orders shortly,” the official said.

MNP would allow mobile users to change their service providers, while retaining their numbers. This new service is likely to improve the quality of services offered by various players. That’s because the introduction of MNP is expected to force mobile operators to both lure and retain subscribers by various incentives and schemes.

After issuing purchase orders, it will take at least a month for the PSUs to get the networks ready. Testing will take another four weeks. Entire networks need to be tested among all the operators before the launch of the MNP service.

MNP was earlier scheduled to start from December 31, last year in all the metros and in the rest of the country by March this year. But some of the mobile operators, including some new players, asked for more time to upgrade their networks. As a result, the government pushed the launch date to March 31 all across the country.

Telecom regulator Trai has fixed Rs 19 as the charge to be paid by a subscriber to avail the MNP service. The whole process of shifting from one operator to another would take a maximum of four days.

According to industry estimates, about 25 per cent of mobile users would like to shift to a new service provider. There are over 500 million mobile subscribers across the country. MNP has already been implemented in such countries as the US, Australia and Pakistan.

BSNL may play spoilsport on DoT's MNP roll-out plan

The Department of Telecom today expressed confident that operators would meet the March 31 deadline for rolling out the MNP services but the state-run BSNL said it is difficult to meet the deadline.

The mobile number portability (MNP) services allows users to change the service providers while retaining their numbers.

The delay on BSNL's part could hamper the DoT's rollout plans as effectiveness of the MNP would, to a large extent, depends on preparedness of all operators. BSNL is the fourth largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers.

"We have asked mobile operators to stick to the March 31, 2010 deadline for rolling out the MNP and we are confident that the March 31, 2010 deadline would be met by them. We will continue to review their preparedness," Telecom Secretary P J Thomas told PTI.

Most of big private players on GSM and CDMA platforms have already hinted that they would meet the deadline.

In a meeting between operators and the DoT to review the preparedness for the MNP roll-out, BSNL said it would not be able to roll out before middle of May.

"We got security clearance for MNP gateway only in February 3 which cause a two-month delay in our preparedness. We have issued the advanced purchase order but supply of equipment, installation and testing would take time till mid-May.. March 31 deadline looks difficult as fas as we are concerned", BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal told PTI.

When asked about BSNL's security delay issue, Thomas said "now they have got it".
