  1. I miss diversity of handsets

I really miss the diversity of handsets. With a diverse OS. i remember starting with a Motorola Startac or one of those first brick phones that came to India. Outgoing was Rs 32 a minute, incoming Rs 16. Over the years, would excitedly look at new handsets, from Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Palm, Sony Ericsson etc. i have owned Ericsson Flip Phones (forgot the model numbers, they were coloured, and the display was slim and only one line, but the smallest smartest flip phones of its time). Sony Ericsson had the W Walkman series which was cool. The Nokia E72 was one of the best phones I had. It had 3G, Qwerty Keyboard, great build quality, gsm, wcdma, gps etc. Symbian S60 was cool. The App Store of its time was getjar. I used spreadsheets on it. And google maps too. It would support J2ME apps. then I had the Sendo X. Another super phone. I used it as a Bluetooth modem with my old PowerBook G3. The Moto Razr was perhaps the best and smartest looking phone ever. There was a candy bar version of Razr which I owned. It had Apple iTunes. The Motorola A780 was a sexy Linux based smartphone with a touch screen as well as a clamshell. I loved it. also had the palm based Kyocera 7135 too. Then the blackberries were cool d the bold. Which had amazing email, the best even by today’s standards. And excellent tools for spreadsheets, word processors etc. loved it. I loved the choice of various phone brands, OS, form factors. i would use scheduleworld.com or zyb.com to synchronise contacts and calendar data between various phones. Now there is only one form factor. A flat screen. And only two OS to choose from. Both very similar, and yet very different. Each comes with an ecosystem that you kind of get locked into. Not much choice. i love the choice of older days.
  2. Moto X 1st gen XT1055 GSM

So, I got one of those obama phones. And it was fine.....until it broke. So, I decided to try and make it work with my US Cellular Moto X. I found this guide and followed it. I was able to make calls and texts....However no data. Which annoyed me. So, me being me, I decided to keep going until it stopped working I tried flashing it, flashing just the modem, I even looked into NV values, bands and whatnot myself. Being a programmer and having worked with hardware many many times in the past, it wasn't too difficult to understand. However, try as I might, I cannot get it to work again. It detects the SIM card, I see the number, and it even says I have voicemails.....However I have no signal. I'm completely puzzled. As far as I can tell from typing *#*#4636#*#* it is in using GSM. and I tried many different ones. Any help is greatly appreciated. As of now, I also tried flashing a different kernel and then just decided to flash CM13 thinking maybe there was a lock in the kernel.....No luck. UPDATE: I trimmed down and put in an old straight talk sim card and it gets bars and it will call....the call obviously won't go through XD but it will call. So, I'm stuck....

Select 'pref mobile IP' in MIP section and enable all six profiles 4. Entire process with no SIM inside and airplane mode turned on **This is applicable for the global version not the CDMA only version.

  6. Hi Guys, I use Android GSM phone and I my 2G connection is ON whole day. I wanted to switch to CDMA. I have 2 questions: HANDSETS: First of all most of Android CDMA handsets are imported and I have heard imported handsets are prone to 1x/EVDO network issues. Imported hadsets are only good for making calls and sending SMSs, not for smoothness internet experience. Is it true ? NETWORK: In GSM I can use 2G while I can receive calls at the same time. 2G disconnects only if I am on live call. I read somewhere that if you use 1x/EVDO on CDMA handsets then when people try to call you, they will get busy tone. it true ? Wi-Fi Tethering: I use WiFi and WiFi tethering Google Maps: since Android versions on phones are out of date and no updates provided, will I get all Google Maps features and updates available on KitKat/latest/GSM versions ?

  10. Hi RIMWebians, Thought of upgrading my phone, budget is not an issue. Essentially I want to be able to use the same phone (voice, data, SMS, USSD) all over the world - CDMA in India and US and GSM elsewhere is what I am thinking. Been reading the forums and I am confused and was hoping that folks here could help. Reason I need an OMH set is that I am pretty sure if I take a programmed phone to the US it will stop working. Worst case scenario, probably if there is nothing, I might need to reprogram while in US and once again I am back. On basis of what I read in RIMWeb I believe the phones can be Droid DNA, Sprint HTC One, Razr Maxx HD. There may be some older models I remember Kapilji and Tusharji were talking about Droid Razr and there is the Droid 3 too... Can the experts please let me know what is the right choice here. Thanks

  12. Hi all, I'm currently using Uninor for my GSM number in AP circle, got Uninor for the great voice call rates, but growing more and more frustrated with network coverage recently and also there are no roaming plans - so I get huge decrease in balance even for weekend trips. Also, my data seems to be not working in roaming in Tamil Nadu (might be due to non-Uninor circle). Looking seriously to MNP to some other network now: Strictly prepaid - should be present in both AP & TN, presence in KA is a plus Good voice (both local and std, I generally use 3-months 1p/2s STVs on Uninor) and data plans (2G is sufficient) in home network and good STV for Roaming voice and if possible Roaming data Decent network coverage in Hyderabad and Chennai Please suggest network and/or plans/STVs. MNP to CDMA is also an option if the plans are very good. Thanks, Mekkie

  18. Hi All, I'm thinking of buying Motorola Razr M by Verizon.I'm particularly smitten by the compact size of the phone for a 4.3 incher as well as good specs. As most of u might know , it also has a Worldphone capability with GSM slot like Photon etc, I was wondering if it has same issues like USSD code etc that were present in photon. if anyone have imported it and used it, can u please give me an insight if its worth getting this phone. I occasionally use RCDMA and mainly looking for using it for GSM. So need to know it works without issues or not with GSM. Thanks
  19. I want an Android with Physical Slider keyboard. Have narrowed down to Droid 4 and (soon going to launch, on 19th Aug) Photon Q. Which one would be better? Droid 4 has higher battery life among the two (of the data in hand at present), but ICS hasn't come yet, Jelly Bean would be light years away. Photon Q will launch with ICS, so have a chance for Jelly Bean. But battery life doesn't look promising (reviews after the launch will give exact idea). Please advice on the technical side. Thanks! 21. I want a slider QWERTY android phone in Mumbai on Vodafone network. Narrowed down to Motorola Droid 4, which has a GSM radio but isn't enabled by Verizon. How do I make it work here in Mumbai? Also, from where can I buy the phone? Do I have to order from USA via someone for a non-contract version or with contract will also do without any efforts? What does Verizon mean when they say with the GSM patch, can roam globally? Does that mean that although I'll be using the phone 100% of the time in India only, it'll be on roaming? Would be glad if anyone can help me clear all these doubts. Thank You Very much!
  22. Hello Guys !! Good to be back at the forum and posting after such long gap ... anyways I have a query for which I only think I can get the answer here ...so here it goes.. I have been RCDMA customer till this April. Although they had many service and data issue, one thing that I liked about RCDMA is that if you have a EvDO postpaid/prepaid plan activated and if you go on national roaming, no additional charges would be needed and you can use EvDO service at roaming area and it will only be deducted from you data plan usage.. However since I switched to Idea GSM, I found this not be the case for GSM provider (atleast for Idea). IF I use 3g data while in roaming, no matter what 3g plan I have activated, the usual rates of 10p/10kb are charged (maybe more I dont remember). In my opinion this is not justified.. I wanted to know if you have experiences with other GSM provided like docomo/vodafone etc where 3g data plan is still usable on roaming ? I have just completed 90 days with Idea and was thinking of MNP to other provider and this is my primary criteria for screening (inclined to go for vodafone or docomo). Thanks !!

  24. GSM phones in India can be hacked Mobile phones on the GSM network in India are not very secure, according to a demonstration by security company, Matrix Shell. Business Line reports that the four founding members of Matrix Shell claim that they were able to hack into GSM phones and use the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, which is a unique number assigned to the SIM card. They were able to make phone calls, intercept phone calls, inflate the bill of a postpaid subscriber and deplete the balance of a prepaid subscriber. Service providers will not raise a security concern from any of these activities, because they appear as though they were made by the person whose account it is. They used firmware called Osmocom, and using software they wrote on it, they were able to hack into a GSM phone. They explained their ease of hacking into a GSM phone here with the level of encryption Indian GSM networks use. Akib Sayyed, one of the founders of Matrix Shell explained that standard encryption on a GSM network should be 5/1, but in India, most providers use 5/0, which essentially is no encryption. He did not specify, however, which Indian networks in particular provide the lower encryption. Operators tend to avoid heavier encryption as this would mean the time taken to connect the mobile to the Base Transceiver Station would be greater. Networks want to avoid that as there is a lot of traffic on the GSM networks. More encryption would also mean more hardware upgrades. Those using the correct encryption frequently shut it off.
